Chairman, Jeff McCloy grew up in Belmont and gained a degree in civil engineering from Newcastle University. Jeff played for the University Rugby Club as a centre-threequarter during this time, including a memorable match in 1970 against a touring side from the University of California.
Jeff and The McCloy Group have generously funded two rugby scholarships through the University of Newcastle. Since 2015 recipients of the McCloy Family Engineering Rugby Union Scholarship and the Jeff McCloy Business and Law Rugby Union Scholarship have taken the field.

Ian Neale played over 200 1st grade games for Uni during the eighties and nineties. He was fortunate to be involved at a time when the club enjoyed its greatest success. A centre that represented Newcastle, NSW Country and Australian Universities he played in the undefeated 1984 Premiership team and went on to enjoy minor and major premierships in first grade in 1985, 1986, 1988 and a minor premiership in 1989. He also played with the victorious third grade major premiers of 1987.
Phil Smith played over 100 games for Uni during the eighties. He played in the 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987 1st grade sides and captained 2nd grade during 1986. He also played in the victorious third grade major premiers of 1987. Phil was Treasurer of the Club in 1983 and 1984, and was honoured to be awarded the 1984 Clubman of the Year award.
